Alcibides Zemenis is a great artist in RL and in Second Life. We can consider very lucky when great RL artists decide to show their works in Second Life also, as Alcibides is making now. His exhibition is at Studio 33, of which I included the LM to visit it.

I would like to add my impressions to see his work. The tables are filled with a deep lyricism. In a dream world in the flow of surrealism, a style, sometimes childish, confronts us with fears and taboos ancentrales. The drawings somewhat reminiscent variegated ethnic, alternating with acuerales where incomnensurable color treatment. I recommend visiting an exhibition.

Me gustaría incluir mis impresiones al contemplar su obra. Los cuadros están llenos de un profundo lirismo. Dentro de un mundo onírico en la corriente del surrealismo, un estilo, en ocasiones infantil, nos enfrenta a miedos y tabús ancentrales. Los dibujos abigarrados con cierta reminiscencias étnicas, se alternan con sus acuerales donde el tratamiento del color es incomnensurable.  Una exposición que recomiendo visitar.

Permitanme que les incluya un texto de una entrevista para la galería Chashama.

  •    How would you describe your artwork, and what are you expressing through it?

    I don’t try to describe it although I have heard it called illustrative, surreal, dada and other mostly positive adjectives. I try to expose my inner life and unconscious by creating a hap-hazard visual diary. I also use an automatic stream-of-consciousness image making method where I put down color or pencil marks and then look at the marks or color and wait until something is suggested. The images I have recorded during my lifetime are projected unto the working area. Either literally as in a cartoon character likeness or as an unresolved emotional expression.

    •    What medium(s) do you work in?

    I have worked in every medium including video and sculpture but I have focused on pencil, watercolor and poetic text lately.

    •    What inspires you?

    That is a difficult answer to put into words. The elements that make one thing, let’s say a song, inspirational or not inspirational might be described as intensity, originality and how I relate to the subject matter. In a song it might be a few lyrics that hit home or a phrasing of the beat that is impossible for the spirit to ignore.

    •    What kind of artistic training do you have, if any?

    I have a BFA, grad work and continued to take classes for many years after I left college with no particular degree in mind. I enjoyed learning and still have a thirst for new insight into art and everything related to art, which could include every form of media, liberal arts and literary direction. I particularly find reward in history and philosophy and have continued to educate myself. I am also reading James Joyce currently.

    •    Who are your heroes (artistically and/or otherwise)?

    Growing up it was Jack Kirby the comic book artist and Bob Dylan. In college I first found Renault, Gauguin and Chagall beacons of visual understanding, later Degas, Goya and Picasso. For a few years, when I was concentrating on a more academic style of illustration I found some of the Pre-Raphaelite, 19th century salon artists and Orientalists enchanting. Its been an unending procession of artistic “heroes.” The last ten years there have been literally hundreds of artist whose work I admire.

    •    Where do you work?

    I work at my home studio. Except for my bed, kitchen and bookcases my home is a studio.

    •    How did you hear about chashama?

    From a friend of an Parisian artist who was managing the show for the artist.

    •    Have you been granted a chashama space? If so, what project was featured and what was your experience like?

    Interesting, the mobs of never ending foot traffic passing by without glancing in the direction of the gallery. I think people have too much information being thrust at them, especially in a place like NYC. There is no time to observe, they have to keep on the move. An accelerated life style, with advertisers pushing harder and being more competitive for the attention of the consumer, and everyone trying to make their life count. That was the reason I called my show Cultural Hysteria.

    •    How long have you been an artist?

    About 45 years.

    •    Have you worked any side jobs to support your art? If so, tell us about them.

    I have had to do commercial work to support myself. At times work unrelated to art. I have worked in construction, a flour mill, the food industry, as a street musician and as a corporate designer/illustrator and intranet web designer, a councilman, an elderly caretaker and a cooking and art instructor. 

    •    Where are you from originally, and what lead you to your current city?

    I was born in Oklahoma, grew up in the Bronx, went back to Oklahoma when I was about 18 and lived there 12 years all together, lived in California for almost 6 years. It’s curious that I never really felt at home till I came back to New York after 20 years out west. I have seen a lot of this country and a few foreign countries as well, all the different lifestyles and I think that gives me perspective.

    •    Do you have any upcoming shows, news, exhibitions or announcements we can make in your Spotlight?

    I have a few drawing in the Wassaic Festival, ironically a fairly large and growing arts festival in my home town of 4,000. I am finishing the illustrations for my novel, a semi-autobiographical fantasy satire, The Goddess of Pigland. I had been studying mythology and Joseph Campbell for some time and I believe the story includes a variation of the hero’s, or at least the anti-hero’s journey. I worked on the text on and off for ten years.

    •    Do you have a website that we can link to? If so, please provide the address.

    I have just started to create a new website, so it is under construction at this time.

    •    What are some thing you do to recharge? Are there any places you go? (yoga, bars, parks, etc…)

    I need undistracted quiet and peace to recharge. That being said, I sometimes make break-throughs under pressure, somethings can not be created except under fire. Real life experience and sometimes tribulations are necessary for inspiration and subject matter. A friend of mine who is an inspired painter once said, “Without my issues I could not paint.” And, yes, I do yoga and a bit of tai chi, long walks in meditative places.

    •    What are some of the biggest challenges you face personally in persevering with your art?

    Distraction and distress, either in my life or by those close to me. Sometimes I drift with out a thought in my head, unmotivated and unambitious. It’s not that easy to sum up. I am still learning about my processes.

    •    What is a risk that you’ve wanted to take with your work and haven’t yet.

    Once, when I was in Los Angeles, I thought of a performance art piece where I would crash an art show and highjack it. I was going to hire actors to dress as police and fellow art-terrorist, but I allowed a friend to discourage me. That would be the kind of risk I have wanted to take, a little crazy maybe, but have not. I suppose I am not crazy enough, but who knows, never say never.

    •    Has digital technology and the internet altered your work in any way? Built patrons? Created followers?

    I can’t say it’s all had a positive effect, it can be quite distracting, but, I currently have several shows in the virtual world of Second Life. So recently technology has been a boon.

You can search for the many streams and Art Goth influences. Under the ZEXPO 2011 event, I thought it interesting to study aspects of BDSM and  fetish and Goth Art. To begin notice does not imply that these parallels are found in all Art Goth as Goth Art is not “BDSM art” .First I should explain what I regard as BDSM. BDSM is a huge box which includes sado-masochistic practices, domination, submission, and some sort of fetish (latex, dress maid, the concept of “I’ve been naughty, punish,”  impossible high heels, bondage, masks, and so on). Do not pretend to argue about whether BDSM is all this, simply use the label to expose part of Goth works.

Se pueden buscar el el Goth Art muchas corrientes e influencias. Al amparo del evento de ZEXPO 2011, he considerado interesante estudiar los aspectos fetichistas y de BDSM del Goth Art. Para empezar avisar que no implica que estos paralelismos se encuentren en todo el arte goth ya que al Goth Art no es un “BDSM art”. Por otro lado conviene explicar antes qué considero como BDSM. El BDSM es un cajón enorme donde se incluyen prácticas sadomasoquistas, De dominación sumisión, y cierto tipo de fetichismos (latex, la vestimenta de criada, el concepto de “he sido malo, castigamé”, los tacones altos e imposibles, el bondage, las máscaras, etc). Another feature Goth movement is to confront the darkness, social taboos and hidden dark side. It is natural that the art is reached BDSM, socially considered as a way of life and see sex, strange and minority.

As for scarification, wounds, blood, needles, etc, widespread in sadomasochism, find reflection in the Goth Art, not as sadomasochistic rituals, but as part of that dark side that accepts the Gothic. The gothic person may come a point in which he sees his body as the
only thing you can have control, and that leads to the piercings, scars, and so on.

I repeat: Goth Art is not BDSM art, but it contains many points of the latter by the inherent characteristics of the philosophy Goth.

Tiene lógica que encontremos dentro del arte Goth orientaciones de BDSM, ya que por definición, el movimiento Goth acepta todas las creencias y tendencias. Además, las influencias romántico-victorianas llevan cierta carga de sumisión femenina fruto de aquella época. El vampirismo introduce, por otro lado, el concepto de dominación sumisión por el vínculo vampírico.

Por otro lado, la estética de los corsés, de los volantes, de la seda y el raso, las máscaras y el vendar los ojos aproxima mucho a las prácticas y fetichismos del BDSM. Una evolución natural hacia un Goth más actual lleva a las máscaras de gas, y a la estética steampunk-grunge.

Tenemos a su vez una corriente dentro del Goth denominada Goth-lolita, muy cercana a la vestimenta de “la criada”, lo que también establece paralelismos con el BDSM.

Otra de las características del movimiento Goth es enfrentarse a la oscuridad, a los tabús sociales y al lado más oscuro y oculto. Es lógico pués que en el art se llegue al BDSM, considerado socialmente como una forma de vida y de ver el sexo, extraña y minoritaria.

En cuanto a las escarificaciones, heridas, sangre, agujas, etc, practicas comunes en el sadomasoquismo, encontramos el reflejo en el Goth Art, no como rituales sadomaso, si no como parte de ese lado oscuro que el gótico acepta. La persona gótica puede llegar un punto en el que vea su cuerpo como lo único sobre lo que puede tener control, y eso lleva a los piercings, escaras, etc.

Repito: el Goth Art no es BDSM art, pero sí recoge muchos puntos de este último por las características inherentes a la filosofía Goth.

Los autores que se han mostrado en dias posteriores en la Goth Gallery son: Victoria Frances y Luis Royo como ilustradores, y Joel Peter witkin como fotógrafo.

Victoria Frances is currently one of the icons of goth design, her work being used both to Illustrate stories and various objects. Her characters are usually in the aesthetics of Victorian romance, and women are mostly surrounded by a halo of doom. The vampire
world is a recurring theme.

Joel Peter Witkin can be considered “damn photographer.” His photographs of composites made with dead human bodies and grotesque themes do not leave the viewer indifferent. Can be considered one of the most controversial artists, leading to its ultimate concept of revulsion at the viewer.

Joel Peter Witkin puede considerarse “el fotógrafo maldito”. Sus fotografías de composiciones realizadas con cuerpos humanos muertos y con temas grotescos no dejan indiferente al espectador. Puede considerarse uno de los artistas más polémicos que lleva a sus últimos extremos el concepto de revulsionar al espectador.

Goth Gallery opens its doors in Zexpo 2011 with an interesting artist program in the world RL goth. The approach of the gallery is to show every day an artist who set the art world Goth. Not mean they are the most important, but they are icons of the movement. Sometimes they are extremists within the current Dark and gore, but certainly his innovative contribution to the Art Goth and Art in general.
Exhibiting their works in the virtual world  seemed a plagiarism, does little to show his wealth of work so in SL is exposed Silene Christen’s original work inspired by each artist.
Program begins with Ramnstein (music band) and Lovecraft (writer). The first bring this controversial issue, dealing with social taboos like innovative music. Lovecraft revolutionized the world of  horror story, so far based on spirits and ghosts, to turn to cults and ancient demons.

Zexpo 2011 is starting!

This is the mission from Zexpo 2011:

ZEXPO is an annual convention/tradeshow/festival that takes place on a large
region known as ZEXPO Island on the ‘A’ rated mainland of Zindra, in the virtual
world of Second Life.  The Island features a new large event every season and
the ZEXPO show itself is an exciting convergence of merchants, performers,
artists, play areas, famous personalities, speciality organisations and
everything that represents SL’s sophisticated adult side. ZEXPO is very
inclusive and very innovative, mixing creativity and inspiration with business
networking, education and hope for the future.

The concept of ZEXPO 2011
(and other events on the island) is one of positive PR and outreach for the
adult mainland of Zindra. While Zindra is ‘adult’ land, it does not contain only
‘adult content’ (though adult content is certainly permitted.) and is often
known as the most liberating place in SL. While ZEXPO 2011 is about promoting
Zindra, it also welcomes non-Zindran content in an effort to cross-promote
interests and reach out across more of Second Life and beyond. Some believe that
a healthy adult mainland means a healthy adult SL which means a healthy SL.

This year’s show features an emphasis on Creative and Active Investment,
Adult Sophistication and a fun ‘Forbidden Carnival’ theme. Other innovations
include a hotel booking system, where attendees will be able to obtain
accomodations for the show’s duration, a plethora of exciting Attractions and
Mini-Events, and a Forbidden Float Contest, where exhibitors can create moving
parade floats.

Silene Christen’s: Childhood.

Childhood is an issue i’m verey concerned and interested on it. On one side are more vulnerable than adults, on the other, their vision of life is so different that  ignore it can difficult to treat or get to know them.
In my installation I have reflected the world of childhood as a sheet of schoolnotebook  that can be filled with experiences, ideas and emotions. On different times with the peculiar perspectives of children (that tree that becomes a makeshift home, these books form a hut, that battlefield with simple forms …). These raised corners show the concerns  and emotions that most affect the infant: the need for love, fears and night terrors, fantasies and delusions and information needs.

La infancia es un tema que me preocupa e interesa. Por un lado son más vulnerables que los adultos, por otro su visión de la vida estan diferente que no tenerlo en cuenta puede hacer que no sepamos tratarlos o llegar a ellos.
En mi instalación he reflejado el mundo de la infancia como una hoja de un cuaderno de tareas que se puede llenar de experiencias, ideas y emociones. Sobre èl diferentes momentos con la peculiar perspectivas de los niños (ese arbol que se convierte en improvisada casa, esos libros que forman una choza, ese campo de batalla con simples formas…). Esas esquinas levantadas nos muestran las preocupaciones y las emociones que afectán más al infante: la necesidad de amor, los miedos y terrores nocturnos, las fantasias e ilusiones la necesidad de información.

The point view of childhood is quite different from that of adults. Where we see a tree, they see a house. Where we see trash, they see a battlefield. I wanted to give a tribute to childhood, a tribute to his world. Beneath all the adults we see are their deepest feelings and fears that we do not understand.

* Dreams and illusions

El punto de vista de la infancia es absolutamente diferente al de los adultos. Donde nosotros vemos un arbol, ellos ven una casa. Donde vemos basura, ven un campo de batalla. Quería dar un homenaje a la infancia, un tributo a su mundo. Debajo de todo lo que los adultos vemos, se encuentran sus profundos sentimientos y miedos que no llegamos a comprender. La instalación se encuentra a su vez salpicada de pequeñas obras de arte sobre los tópicos reflejados.

I Probably Have A disposition to dwell on ‘dark’ subjects, and it Just Might show in my images. Perhaps just a response to the dogmas Pathological That force on us are, the answers to common Existence are founded on That How It Is Nothing But felt, what is traditional, what is moral, how it Should Be. The current Zeitgeist unlikable dictates what I do not worship relativity Even If We Can Have an Imperfect Understanding only of the absolute.
I reject MOST modern and avant-garde art, in other words, Almost all the art That is seen, is dependent upon Which time, context, consensus and stupefying vanity. I’m not headed for the institute art world, I’m born of the underground and compare my work to the art of all Centuries, or everything else, like a poem or a pocket calculator. Good things.
Anyhow, I do not like my images to Explain very much. I INTEND to stand or fall Let Them by Themselves.

Mi inspiración viene de una obsesión con la filosofía detrás y delante de la vida diaria tal y como se nos presenta, por ej, las usuales preguntas existenciales. Mis trabajos son represetnaciones simbólicas de mis puntos de vista y reflexiones sobre ello. Las criaturas de mis trabajos estan locas, solas o aisladas, en busca de algo absoluto entre lo relativo, intentado encontrar una verdad objetiva, o simplemente siendo copletamente nihilistas.
Para crear mis fotografías entrecruzo docenas de de exposiciones diferentes lo que al final llega a ser una imagen surrealista. Estas escenas son facilmente reconocibles pero la metafísica onírica me permite ilustrar temas psicológicos o espirituales. en esto he tenido que ser autodidacta ya que las escuelas no enseñan nada, solo hacer una basura arbitraria y buscar los estipendios. 
Tengo tendencia a morar en temas oscuros, y eso se debe mostrar en mis imágenes. quizás solo es una respeusta patológica a los dogmas a los que se nos somete, las respeustas comunes a la existencia que se fundan solo en como se siente, lo que es tradicional, moral o como debe ser. sin gustarme lo que el actual Zeitgeist dicta, no trabajo la relatividad incluso si nosotros solo tenemos una compresión imperfecta del absoluto

Rechazo la mayoria del del arte moderno y vanguardista, en otras palabras, casi todo el arte que veo, el cual depende del tiempo, contexto, consenso y una vanidad estupefacioente. No me encamino ni dirijo por el mundo del arte institucionalizado. He nacido de los suburbios y comparo mi trabajo con el arte de los siglos, o con cualquier cosa como un poema o una calculadora de bolsillo. Buenas cosas por cierto.
De caulquier forma, no me gusta explicar mis imágenes mucho. Intento dejar que sean ellas mismas las que hablen.

Great success of public attendance at the opening of the exhibition The Damn exhibition. Perhaps more important was the debate that originated in the presentation, which touched on issues such as: What is to be Goth, if there is an Art Goth, or if you can pigeonhole a particular artist in this movement.

En la presentación se resumió algunos puntos tanto de la obra presentada en la exposición como del artista en sí. Los artistas participantes fueron: Bryn Oh, Anley Piers y Silene Christen. Se podría decir que los que están (o sus obras al menos), están dentro de este movimiento, pero no estan todos lo que son. Hay muchos más artistas consagrados en los entornos virtuales dentro del Arte Goth de los que iremos dando detalles en sucesivos artículos. Hoy toca comentar sobre los artistas que esponen.

The presentation outlined some points of both the work presented in the exhibition as the artist himself. Participating artists were: Bryn Oh, Anley Piers and Silene Christen. You could say that those who are (or works at least) are within this movement, but are not all they are. There are many more artist enshrined in virtual environments within the Goth Art that we will give details in subsequent articles. Today we comment on the artists who expose.

Sobre su obra en general, lo que más llama la atención es el trabajo de extracción de materiales y estructuras frías como el hierro, las tuercas, tornillos, etc. De formas y personajes llenos de calor, ternura y fragilidad. La obra de la muestra es un claro ejempo de ello, con el añadido de una fina ironía que se traduce en esa “pesca de moscas”. Como siempre impresionante.
